I’m 75 years old, a scientist, self-taught artist, father, and grandfather who lives in Hawaii. I graduated from college as a science major but took a lot of Art History as an elective to get my Bachelor of Science degree.
I became fascinated with Art History and researched the different techniques of art used during the medieval period from the 5th to 17th century, especially (chiaroscuro) during the 16th century.
I, above all, liked the art of Rembrandt and Caravaggio and hoped one day I could own a painting from that time frame; I even collected rare books from that era as a teenager. Let’s say I had an otherworldly affinity to the art and writing of that period as if I’d once lived during that time.
One day, I realized I would never be able to own the art from that period, so I thought to myself I would just paint it. So, there I was at the age of 30, sitting down with a paintbrush I’d never handled to paint a Rembrandt, and to put it simply, I did just that. The results were amazing. I actually painted a Rembrandt!
A year later (1982), I enrolled in the (now gone) Burnley School of Art in Seattle, Washington, which was later sold that year and became the Seattle Art Institute. I spent the next two semesters there but dropped out for financial reasons. Even though I had to leave, my time was well spent and inspiring.
Though I had many great instructors at Burnley, one of my favorites was Bill Cummings, a feisty 80-year-old from the Northwest Artist group established in the 1940s and 50s. I learned a lot about negative spaces, shapes, and being able to make a painting from everyday life and movement.
So here I am today, hopefully, wiser, older, and taking up where I left off. I’m painting in paradise now and always looking for inspiration. Hopefully, with the time I have left, I can still create and inspire.
